Frequently Asked Questions - What's Hot Version 1.0.0

What are the three circles above the song list for?

Those let you know, visually, how fresh the list of hot songs you are viewing is.  Based on your list freshness settings Green means the list is fresh, Orange that it’s about to expire and Red that it’s expired.  You can single tap on the circles to display a real-time countdown of how old the list is and then tap again to see how soon till your list expires.  iTunes hot songs lists do change but not every minute.  A one hour refresh setting is recommended.

My country’s not on the list. Why?

You can only access song lists for countries that Apple provides an iTunes store for.  More importantly you can only purchase songs from your home account iTunes store.  It you shop at the UK store for example you can preview songs from all 63 countries but can only buy songs from the UK store.

Are there any download limits?

WiFi: No.  You can download as many song lists and listen to as many song clips as you like.
Cellular: Yes.  Apple restricts song clip downloads to 5 MB every 5 minutes if you are connected to the Internet via a cellular network.  5 MB equals roughly four 30 second song clips.

What is My Home iTunes Store?

The short answer: You can only shop at your home county's iTunes store.

The long answer: When you first installed What’s Hot the app checked your regional settings to determine your home country.  It then uses this setting when redirecting you to iTunes on your device to display more information about a song, play a longer song clip (90s) and provide the option to purchase the song or album.

In the settings section of your device you must specify the country you normally purchase iTunes content from.  As mentioned above this is done automatically for you when you installed What's Hot.  This helps to ensure that when you find a song you really like (using the iTunes section of the What’s Hot's central panel’s iTunes section), and go to iTunes to explore the song, the artist, the album or its genre any purchases you later make will be specific to the country you always shop at.

What are the recommended Fetchbot settings?

WiFi: Max list age of 1 hour and Auto Refresh via WiFi On.
Cell: Max list age of 1 day and Auto Refresh via Cell Off.

What does “Preload Images” do?

If turned on the small images of album art will be downloaded each time you refresh your song list.  This does increase the time to download your list but makes scrolling the list of songs much smoother.

There’s more?
You bet!

Swipe the central panel to access four other panels:

Detailed info for the current song.
The ever handy Jukebox.
Social Media connections.
iTunes Access.

What is Jukebox Mode?

Jukebox mode allows you to play your current song list sequentially from the top to the bottom or the bottom to the top of the list.  You can also play the list in shuffle mode and repeat the list when it reaches the end while auto playing.

Can I filter the list of songs?

For sure!  At the top of the song list you can tell What’s Hot to filter on the artist’s name, the song name or the genre.  You then type in what to filter on in the song list and the list will filter itself for you in real time.  And yes, Canada's Top 100 Classical song list often has up to 10 versions of Pachelbel's Cannon in G.  Who knew there were so many versions! :)

Can I use Jukebox with a filtered list?

For sure!

What the heck are “Song Beads”?

At the top of the main display a bead for each song in your list is displayed.  The beads are arranged with the number one song in the list being the top left bead and the last song being the bottom right bead.

If you tap on a song bead that song bead’s song will start playing for you. Is that not cool or what?

What is “Eye Candy”?

The Eye Candy options allow you to find just the right combination of shapes and animations for the graphical parts of the main display that suits your tastes.  Parts of the main display that include adjustable eye candy are:

Song Beads
Power Meters
Progress Meter

For the Power and Progress Meters you can change the shape and size of the individual segments.

For the Power Meters and Song Beads you can select animations to use when a song is not playing.

iTunes Store Limitations

The coolest thing about What’s Hot is that you can display songs from the top song lists from other countries.  However you can only shop in your home iTunes store.

If you are viewing a list of songs for your home iTunes store you can, from the iTunes panel of the app, tap to explore the song itself on iTunes.

However, if you are viewing a list of songs for a country other than your home iTunes store you can explore the album the song is a part of but not the song itself.

Also, since not all songs, albums and artists are available in all countries you may find that a hot song in one country is not available in your home iTunes store.  If this happens try searching in your home iTunes store for the artist, the album or genre to locate iTune's local version of the song or album.

iTunes Error – Item Not Available

The songs iTunes provides are not available in all countries.  If you are viewing a list from a country other than your own and access the iTunes link to that album you may occasionally get this message:

“The item you've requested is not currently available in the <your country> Store but it is available in the <song list’s iTunes country>. Tap [Change Store] to view this item.”

If you select [Change Store] (Which we don't recommend.) iTunes on your device will now assume that this new country is now your home store and it should use that country for purchases and software updates.

iTunes Error – Account Not In This Store

If you do accidentally change your iTunes store to another country and then attempt to purchase a song or perform an app update you will receive this message.

“Your account is not valid for use in the <other country> store.  You must switch to <your home country> store before purchasing.”

Resetting your iTunes Store

To reset your iTunes store to the one you normally use (your home iTunes store) perform the following quick and simple steps:

Exit from the What’s Hot app.
Open the Settings app for your device and tap on the “iTunes & App Stores” link.
Tap on “Apple ID” at the top of the panel.
Tap on “View Apple ID”
Enter your Apple ID password when prompted and then tap “OK”
The iTunes account on your device will now be correctly linked with your home iTunes country store.

Older iOS Devices

If have an older iOS device, an original iPad for example, you can only run iOS 5.x and you will not be able to use the Facebook and Twitter features of What's Hot.  You can however send information about a hot song that you've found to your friends via e-mail.
